MyVidster Shutters and Gay Twitter Reacts
Kilian Melloy READ TIME: 4 MIN.
A well-known porn site that gay users have relied on for almost two decades suddenly went dark, with its owner posting what seemed to be conflicting messages about the site's abrupt cessation.
MyVidster owner Marques Gunter posted to the site's homepage after the site went dark this past weekend to say that he had "decided to shut MyVidster down," explaining that he had "been running this site for over 18 years," and implying that the job of keeping the site going had been detrimental to his health.
"I have scarficed my life for MyV and I almost died last year doing so," Gunter advised, before letting readers know, "PS, I know of the gammercal errors, but I really do not give a f**k."
But in a tweet sent out on X, Gunter promised that the site would be back up and running in two months or less.
"I'd like to give you all my sincerest apologies for all the downtime," Gunter said in a video message. "We're gonna make it up, so what we're doing, at least in the meanwhile, is allow paying pro members access to the website for at least the next 60 days."
"I don't want this to be interpreted as a money grab," Gunter added. "We just need to fix a lot of things so that everyone could have the service again."
"Please be patient. I love you all, and thank you."
The post was captioned with the written message, "Sorry for the chaos lately. We will have a solution way before the 60 day deadline. We honor everything we say and do. Our new search engine will be back online that is so much better than the legacy one."
"MyVidster was used to share and bookmark videos from various websites," UK newspaper The Daily Mail detailed.
"Although it was not officially a porn site, it was used by many to save and view pornography, much in the same way that Tumblr previously was."
"Fans on social media went into meltdown mode after the news of MyVidster closing down was announced," the newspaper added.
"It's a money grab," one person commented the day the video message was posted.
"A question," another X user posted in reply. "The note on the landing page sounds more permanent than the message in your video. Could you shed light on whether or not the shutdown is temporary?"
"I hope so because I loved Myvidster and I am so mad that it's been removed," another commented, evidently in response to the promise that the site would be back up and running, "but I hope and pray that u guys bring it back big and better."
Others echoed the notes of grief and support evident in those responses.
"I have been a gold member for a few years now," one person posted. "I was already in mourning for this site. When will this go into effect for pro members? It was part of my daily activity to check the site. I really hope it comes back permanently and works as it originally did. Good luck."
"Please don't shut the site down!" another added. "I've been using it for years and love the site! You have serious customers and fans who appreciate you. Don't let the negativity get you down. Even the BEST businesses and organizations have haters! But you are appreciated!"
More lamentation was present on a Reddit thread about the site closing down.
"crying oh my god, my vidster!" one Reddit user posted.
"Nooo that was my go to spank bank for like 15 years," someone else cried out. "Wish I'd downloaded some of the vids. I had hundreds!"
"Noooo!" another said. "I was using it almost daily to get off with the videos it had. Lots of hot content creator videos lost. I mean they must still be uploaded to the sites like streamtape or the others but they're not showing anywhere to be seen 😞".
"RIP to my ~100 pages of bookmarks, even though 50% of them didn't play anymore," another sighed.
But along with the grieving were recommendations for alternatives, as well as comments about how MyVidster had become less reliable.
"BarebackBastards," one contributor posted.
"Coomer," suggested another.
"gaymaletube," a third chimed in.
"hotgaylist has new clips every day and a directory of thousands of porn stars with links to their clips," another put in.
"I saw this and was all 'no all my bookmarks!'" someone else related, "... but it was only 1. That was the site with the awful interface and pop-ups. Not sad to see it go."
"I have had a Myvidster account for years," one user commented. "However, I have gravitated over to Boyfriend.tv for the last year or so, as Myvidster became more and more unreliable (search function doesn't work, videos don't save to their cloud, site being down repeatedly, etc)."
Even in the midst of despair, however, humor shone a ray of light.
"what is myvidster" someone queried, only to get the reply: "It's an online bible study group that OP will dearly miss."
