Streaming Queer: August 2024

This month's streaming offering has humor, horror, and hot queer sex on screen. If you weren't able to see "Interview with the Vampire" on AMC+ and "Love Lies Bleeding" in cinemas (or simply need a rewatch!), now's your chance. We've got a queer celeb-filled slumber party hosted by Monét X Change; a Broadway performer brings us along for the emotional, inspiring renovation of his historical home; and a documentary about the history of a gay bar in Iowa.

We reunite with shows like fashion and gossip extravaganza "Emily in Paris," tense, steamy finance drama "Industry," and quirky murder mystery "Only Murders in the Building." "The Umbrella Academy" returns for its final season, "Riverdale" star KJ Apa is back on screen as a biker with a buzzcut, and queer athletes are shining bright at the Olympics on Peacock. "Love Lies Bleeding"

This twisted, messy, sweaty and superqueer Kristen Stewart-starring film introduced us to out actor Katy O'Brian. Lou (Stewart) is a gym manager who falls hard for ambitious bodybuilder Jackie (O'Brian), who is passing through town on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. What follows is a "blood-soaked revenge story" where the explosive combination of Lou's criminal family and her relationship with Jackie inspires a string of increasingly violent acts. The film serves body horror and slasher vibes on a hot, queer platter.

"The Last American Gay Bar" Season 1

This docu-series explores the role of gay bars in the lives of queer elders who were finding themselves and realizing their queerness in the '70s while they were being drafted into the Vietnam War. The show focuses on the community they found, the devastation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the '80s, and the impact of the cultural changes on these openly gay men since then. "The Last American Gay Bar" is the story of Iowa's legendary Blazing Saddle, the community that built it, and the community that grew because of it.

"Breaking New Ground" Season 1

"Breaking New Ground" is an emotional, inspiring home renovation show with an important story at the heart of it. Honoring a 200-year-old home by breathing new life into it while maintaining as much of its original detail as possible, Broadway performer and choreographer Robert Hartwell shares the heartwarming history of his family, the history of America, and the story of his life as a Black, queer creative.

We follow as Robert reflects on the monumental fact that he owns a home that in very recent history he would not have been allowed to step into. We see him learn about the secret back entrances traveled frequently by slaves who are recorded in the home's logbook with tally-marks and no names. This is "a renovation story that celebrates the resilience of Robert`s journey, as well as those who came before him." The show combines local cultural history and joyful home renovation adventures, as Robert and his team work with the intention to fill the house with color and joy.

"Monét's Slumber Party" Season 1

The queer chaos and laughter-filled shenanigans of "Monét's Slumber Party" is exactly what you'd imagine an adult sleepover with all your favorite queer celebs would be like. In each episode, magnificent drag queen Monét X Change hosts a handful of hilarious people who are down for whatever fun she has planned. They spend the episodes asking each other questions, playing slumber party games, and offering the audience a fun moment of escapism. There are guest stars galore, including Joel Kim Booster, Adam Rippon, and fellow drag queens Kim Chi, Jujubee, and Bob the Drag Queen.

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics

"One Fast Move"

Wes Neal ("Riverdale" star KJ Apa with a buzzcut, stubble, and muscles that are on display throughout the R-rated film's training montages) is a "troubled" young man who seeks out his estranged father (Eric Dane, "Euphoria"), a legendary moto-racer, for support in his plan to make his passion for racing into a legit professional career. With a motorcycle store owner's help, Wes "begins to dismantle the emotional barriers built by his father's absence." Out actress Maia Reficco ("Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin") plays Wes' love interest, Camila.

"One Fast Move" premieres August 8 on Prime Video.
