Gay Pop Star Robyn Reveals She 'Always Hated' Elon Musk Before It Was Trendy
READ TIME: 2 MIN.
Swedish singer Robyn, known for her anthems resonating deeply within LGBTQ+ communities such as "Dancing On My Own, "shared strong criticism of tech billionaire Elon Musk during a recent appearance on the "Las Culturistas" podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.
Robyn, whose music has long provided empowerment and emotional resonance for queer audiences, said, "I have always hated him. Way before it was cool to hate him. There was a time when it wasn’t cool to hate him. People didn’t even think about him that much at least."
She pinpointed the moment her disdain crystallized: Musk's February 2018 SpaceX Falcon Heavy test flight, which launched a Tesla Roadster into space with David Bowie's "Space Oddity"playing.
"I started hating him when he put a Tesla in space with a David Bowie song on it. He actually shot a car into space. As if there wasn’t enough s**t floating around, "Robyn stated.
The artist, whose ninth studio album "Sexistential" is set for release on March 27, 2026, elaborated on broader implications, advocating for "democracy in space"and on Earth, at a time when Musk wields significant influence through his companies SpaceX and X, formerly Twitter.
Robyn also critiqued Amazon founder Jeff Bezos for a similar space tourism stunt, mocking his post-flight realization about protecting Earth: "OK, so you have to like, destroy the human race, destroy the environment, to go up, so that we all can have you realize this thing we all understand."
These comments come amid heightened scrutiny of Musk, particularly from LGBTQ+ advocates, due to his public statements opposing transgender rights. Musk has repeatedly used his platform on X to criticize what he calls the "woke mind virus, "including remarks about his estranged transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, a 21-year-old model whom he claimed was "killed"by it.
Wilson, who came out as transgender in 2022, has faced public family discord amplified by Musk's comments. Musician Grimes, mother of three children with Musk, expressed being "endlessly proud"of Wilson in response.
Actor Marlon Wayans voiced support for Wilson, slamming Musk's treatment of his daughter.
Singer Billie Eilish has criticized Musk's wealth accumulation.
Robyn's remarks add to a growing chorus of entertainment figures distancing themselves from Musk, whose right-wing political stances and ownership of X have alienated parts of the LGBTQ+ community. GLAAD, an organization advocating for LGBTQ+ acceptance, has tracked Musk's posts as harmful to transgender people, noting over 100 instances since 2023 promoting anti-trans rhetoric.
The podcast episode, released this week, coincides with promotion for "Sexistential", Robyn's first album in eight years, preceded by singles "Dopamine" , "Talk To Me, "and "Sexistential" .
Robyn described the album's theme as exploring "sensual life, "emphasizing sensitivity and attraction without external interference.
As a queer icon whose introspective dance-pop has soundtracked countless coming-out stories and pride events, Robyn's candidness underscores a cultural shift where public figures openly challenge billionaires'unchecked power, especially when it intersects with anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.
Her comments, made on January 15, 2026, reflect a moment when Musk's influence peaks amid his ties to political figures, amplifying community calls for accountability on issues affecting transgender people.
