Gay Penguins at Berlin Zoo Just Became Dads

Skipper and Ping, two male emperor penguins at Berlin Zoo, just adopted an abandoned egg, and have already started caring for it, according to USA Today.

The couple was given an egg from the only female penguin in the zoo. She has reportedly not hatched an egg in over two decades and seemed disinterested in trying anymore.

The two 10-year-old penguins showed signs that they wanted an egg previously, according to DPA International News.

"They kept trying to hatch fish and stones," zoo spokesperson Maximilian Jaeger said to DPA.

Jaeger also said that: "The two male penguins are acting like exemplary parents, taking turns to warm the egg."

USA Today reports that homosexual penguin couples are not unheard of both in the wild and in captivity, and that with emperor penguins, it's the males that warm the eggs after the mothers give birth and hunt for food to revitalize themselves.

Best of luck to the new parents!
